Why do some people feel the need to invite themselves to other people's conversations?

You're right its rude. I work in an office setting too and maybe I want to talk to one person about a situation and before I know it there is a small circle of individuals standing around and listening to what we are talking about. They may not offer their 2 cents but they sure do run to hear the juicy gossip.
