What should i do with my dry, and curly hair?

Ive come to wits end in dealing with my hair. Once stepping out of the shower, it dries into this frizzy, and curly mess, and in order to make it look nice, i MUST straighten my hair each time it comes in contact with water. otherwise, i have that unmanageable and unattractive mess. While this is irritable, i want to keep a decent amount, but not too much, or length, without straightening (the heat damage and constant odor and dependency of straightener). so with that is there any styles out there that i could just use some kind of gel, mouse, or anything to keep it looking a little straight with some volume? thanks for any answers.
