My ex-employer took out monies from my payroll check that I did not authorize. What do I do?

My employer mad a mistake and it cost him 400.00. I was not there the day this happened and when I got back this is what I walked into. I have since quit because I could not stand being cussed or eing informed "I OWN YOU!" HELP!
