Help Choosing A Patron God/ Goddess?

I recently started reading A Solitary Witch By Silver Ravenwolf and as I was reading "The Thirteen Powers Of A Witch" noticed it made mention of A Patron God/Goddess. I have never before in my past studies of Wicca heard of such a thing and am no curious as to how a Patron/ Matron is chosen, any help would be much appreciated!
